For the first time in a long time,Gigolos season 4 episode 7 sex scenes Tom Cruise appears to be going through the motions and running (and running, and running some more) on autopilot.
When Cruise was cast as Jack Reacher in the summer of 2011, fans of Lee Child's bestselling book series were outraged. Cruise was considered much too small to play the hulking Military Police investigator. But when the movie hit the following year, that didn't matter.
Regardless of his slight height, Cruise was still Cruise -- one of the biggest (and best) movie stars on the planet. Fans piped down, because at the end of the day, Jack Reacherwas a good movie.
The same can't be said for the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which proves that Jack "the guy you didn't count on" Reacher just isn't as interesting, let alone repeatable, as Cruise's Mission: Impossiblehero Ethan Hunt.
This time around, director Ed Zwick (The Last Samurai) takes the reins from Christopher McQuarrie, and the result is a workmanlike sequel that is competent but hardly exceptional, and almost certainly too formulaic. Fans of Child's books will likely be satisfied, but fans of Cruise may be a little worried.
SEE ALSO: Here's every single time Tom Cruise ran in a movieIn Never Go Back, Reacher is no longer a member of the military, but rather an IHOP-eating civilian, though he still has his charming ways of extracting information. Reacher is called back into action when his successor, Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), is framed for espionage, forcing him to uncover the truth about a group of active duty soldiers formerly under his command.
That truth involves ParaSource, a military contractor run by General Harkness (Robert Knepper) that has lost $1 billion in government contracts and is in big financial trouble, forcing it to devise other ways of maintaining its profits. Gen. Harkness dispatches his best people, including an assassin code-named The Hunter (Patrick Heusinger), to cover up details of the crime (which involves missing weapons) and kill Major Turner.
When Turner's lawyer is tortured and found murdered, all signs point to Reacher, who is quickly "recalled" back into the Army as part of the cover-up in order to give the Military Police jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, in the midst of all of this, Reacher learns he may or may not have fathered a teenage girl named Samantha (Danika Yarosh), who alternates between being street-smart and incredibly stupid. (Yes, credit cards and cell phones can be traced. So much for having Reacher's intuition!) She knows that her mysterious father was a big military hero ... and a total asshole. Reacher clearly believes he fits that description, and even if he isn'ther father, he might as well be for the length of the film's running time.
Can Reacher, Turner and his maybe-daughter outrun The Hunter long enough to expose the truth? The answer, of course, is "yes," but the devil is in the details, or lack thereof.
SEE ALSO: Top secret fun facts about the ‘Mission: Impossible’ filmsNever Go Backhas a bit of a feminist streak thanks to the tough-talking Turner, who proves a fine foil for Reacher. The two of them share the rapport of two parents who have differing ideas of how to raise their daughter, and show good teamwork during one particularly heated shootout at a New Orleans wharf.
The problem with Never Go Backis that it's one long chase scene that is far too predictable to leave any kind of lasting impression. This is the kind of slimmed-down sequel (goodbye Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog!) that is eminently watchable, but you'll forget within 48 hours of seeing it.
So what actually works?
Well, just as the first Jack Reacherlaunched Jai Courtney, who went on to star in several blockbuster franchises, Never Go Backintroduces movie fans to Heusinger, a primarily-TV actor who I recognized from Hulu's Casual. He makes for a menacing and physically imposing antagonist in Never Go Back, and even though his character isn't developed very much, he manages to hold his own against Cruise and the audience's inherent expectation that eventually, he'll be defeated.
At one point, Gen. Harkness warns The Hunter not to turn his mission into a competition, for the Army "ran out of medals" to give Reacher, but you can see Heusinger measuring himself against Cruise, which keeps things mildly interesting. It's as if The Hunter knows he'll become The Hunted, but before he dies, he's going to put up one hell of a fight.
SEE ALSO: 7 high-flying facts about the movie ‘Top Gun’Speaking of those fights, they sure do seem to take a lot out of Cruise, who doesn't get up quite as quickly as he used to. It appears that at 54 years young, Father Time has finally caught up with the ageless actor, though I may be forced to eat my words by the time Mission: Impossible 6rolls around.
To be clear, Cruise has still got It. When Reacher tells The Hunter that he's going to break his arms, his legs and then his neck, you absolutely believe it. As an actor, Cruise always keeps his promises, which include total commitment on his part. When one character calls Reacher "very intense," it feels like an understatement.
It's not until the last few minutes that Cruise finally flashes the toothy movie star grin we've been waiting for the whole movie, as his drifter hitchhikes his way into the horizon. But by that time, it's too late. Cruise is going to settle into his Denzel Washington/Harrison Ford years quite nicely, but action movies like this are a young man's game right now, and Cruise is getting a little long in the tooth to be jumping across rooftops.
The title takes its name from a line in the film, as one character warns Reacher that "people like us can never go back to the real world, because people around us always get hurt." Well Mission: Impossibleis one thing, but Jack Reacheris a franchise that Cruise should never go back to, lest his legacy as an action star gets hurt.
