Been dreaming of raising your own little Porg family since Star Wars: 974 ArchivesLast Jedi?
You can soon live like Luke Skywalker on the island of Ahch-To, surrounded by fluffy little Porgs, thanks to a new mixed reality project from Lucasfilm's immersive entertainment division.
SEE ALSO: Lightsaber dueling is now an official sport in FranceILMxLAB's Project Porg was first announced in October at Magic Leap’s L.E.A.P Conference, but on Tuesday, the team dropped a first peek at what the project will look like.
To be released for free download on Magic Leap One headsets, Project Porg lets you raise your own Tamagotchi-like version of the Star Wars character — and their family.
As explained in the video, Project Porg kicks off with your ol' pal Chewbacca, who has left a device with you along with a Porg. Another old friend, C-3PO, sends you a message explaining how to take care of your little winged creature.
A quick and stern note to any Wookiees who may pick up your headset: Porgs are not for eating.
You'll figure out their personality over days, and follow the Porg life cycle over time. You give them treats, nurture them as they build their own little Porg family, and feed their babies in the nest. Yup, baby Porgs are just going to sit in your living room demanding your love and attention.
"It's really very much like a relationship that one would have with their dog or cat," said Matt Martin, creative executive, Lucasfilm Story Group, in the video.
The team considered various ways people interact with their pets, and in particular, the types of toys they play with. So, you can play with your Porgs with a Chewie doll (take that, Wookiee), a ball, and most excitingly, a laser pointer.
The ILMxLAB team worked closely with the animators who worked on the Porgs for The Last Jedito make sure the representation was faithful to the film.
"One of the things that we felt was most compelling was this idea of character companions. You actually develop a relationship with a character over time," said ILMxLAB executive in charge Vicki Dobbs Beck in the video.
"Project Porg is an aspirational experiment, and it's important because we can spark people's imaginations about what's going to be possible in the world of mixed reality in the future ... You can take that same character with you to public locations, possibly even a place like a theme park."
No release date has been announced for Project Porg just yet, just "soon."

Combined with Lenovo's combination augmented-reality headset game Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, we're quickly moving into a reality in which Star Wars characters parade into our houses, demand treats, have babies, call lightsaber duels, and invade the floor with battle droids.
The Force, and my credit card, is strong with this.
